On June 19, 2025, the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano hosted a discussion on sustainable fuels, including biofuels, hydrogen, and e-fuels. The event brought together academia and industry to explore clean fuels for internal combustion engines (ICEs) with low or zero emissions.
Internal combustion engines, a reliable, flexible, and cost-effective technology, can significantly contribute to decarbonizing road, industrial, off-road, maritime, and aviation transport when fueled with climate-neutral alternatives. Biofuels such as Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and synthetic e-fuels produced from renewable energy, including hydrogen, enable ICEs to approach net-zero CO₂ emissions, complementing electrification efforts and supporting a faster transition toward a fossil-free mobility system.
The event highlighted the collaboration between research and industry to accelerate the adoption of clean fuels and promote sustainable transport solutions.
