On Wednesday, April 16th, Mehrshad Kolahchian defended his Doctoral Thesis in front of an international Committee and was awarded a PhD in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology, in conclusion of his PhD Programme at Politecnico di Milano.
This Ph.D. thesis applies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to hydrogen production via green (renewable electrolysis), blue (natural gas with CCS), biogas reforming, and methane pyrolysis pathways, and evaluates hydrogen use in transportation versus conventional fuels, BEVs, and biofuels.
Updated scenarios show PV-based green H₂ at 1.76–2.25 kgCO₂/kgH₂ and wind-based H₂ at 0.8–1.36 kgCO₂/kgH₂. Blue hydrogen can meet the EU taxonomy threshold (~3 kgCO₂/kgH₂) under low-emission supply chains. Biogas reforming may achieve carbon-negative H₂ with renewable electricity, while current methane pyrolysis exceeds 3 kgCO₂/kgH₂.
In mobility, hydrogen vehicles can match or outperform biofuels and BEVs in carbon footprint under Italian conditions.
Congratulations Mehrshad!
